Riols is a French commune in the Hérault department in the region of Occitania . The inhabitants are called Riolais.

geography

Riols is located in the valley of the Jaur River , four kilometers from Saint-Pons-de-Thomières and is one of the largest municipalities in France by area. The municipality is part of the Haut-Languedoc Regional Nature Park .

The municipality comprises 17 small villages, including Riols, Langlade, Bordevieille, Lignon, Ardouane, Brettes, Mézouilhac, Cassillac, Euzèdes, Marso, Condades and Roulio. Most of the smaller towns are now only very sparsely populated and some of them are only inhabited during the summer months. Due to the sloping location and the labor market situation, most of the residents have moved to the larger cities and still use their apartments as weekend and holiday homes.

In the grottoes of the region one could see traces of civilization from the time of 3600 BC. Find. A strong textile industry developed between the 16th and 19th centuries, but has now come to a complete standstill. Riols led resistance to the coup of Napoleon III. dated December 2, 1851. Victor Hugo mentioned this in 1874 in his historical novel "Quatre-vingt-treize" , which deals with the political terror of the terrible year 1793.

  • Every year since 2004, Riols has been awarded the title "village fleuri" as a "flowery village" and received one of a maximum of four flowers, which are awarded similar to the stars in hotels.
  • In Riols (Saint-Benoît d'Ardouane) there was the Benedictine convent Sacré-Coeur de Marie from 1864 to 1901 . It was a subsidiary of the La Rochette monastery in Caluire-et-Cuire near Lyon, which goes back to Thérèse de Bavoz .
