Saint-Chinian is a French commune with 1677 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hérault department in the Occitanie region .

history

The area around the municipality of Saint-Chinian was already settled in prehistoric times. There was an oppidum where the Notre Dame de Nazareth chapel of the municipality of Tudéry can be found today, and not far from the settlement there was a rocky cleft with tombs. Traces of Neolithic settlement, dolmens and caves can be found in Camp Redon, Cauduro and Le Priou.

The remains of a total of 21 villas date from Roman times , mainly in the areas of Les Pradasses and Le Burgas, and Visigoth tombs in Joucasso de Cazo, Saint-Laurent, Salabert, Sourteilho and Saint-Pierre de Figuières.

The medieval history of the settlement began with the foundation of a monastery on the left bank of the Vernazobre in 794 by the Benedictine monk Anhan, which was soon named Sanch Ahan and was finally renamed Saint-Chinian in 1102. Soon the monastery began to grow grapes and by the 14th century was already well known in a larger area.
