Puissalicon ( Occitan : Puèg-ericon ) is a place and a municipality in the south of France with 1,353 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hérault department in the Occitania region .

location

The round village ( Circulade ) Puissalicon is located on a hill at a height of about 120 meters above sea level. d. M. about 16 kilometers (driving distance) north of Béziers ; the small town of Pézenas is about 22 kilometers to the east. The small coastal river Libron flows through the municipality.

At the beginning of the 19th century the population of the community was around 630; Despite the phylloxera crisis and the progressive mechanization of agriculture , the population has grown steadily since then - apart from minor fluctuations - which is still ongoing due to the relative proximity to the city of Béziers and the significantly lower property prices in the countryside.

economy

In earlier times, the residents of the village lived largely on self-sufficiency from agriculture, with both grain and wine being grown. In addition, they ran a little cattle (pigs, chickens, etc.). As in many places in Languedoc , viticulture dominated in the 19th century; the local winegrowers' cooperative markets the wine produced here through the appellations Côtes de Thongue , Pays d'Herault and Pays d'Oc . Because of the sales crisis for French wine, however, only about half of the agricultural land is still viniculture; on the other half, grain ( wheat , maize ) and sunflowers are grown again.

history

Although numerous Gallo-Roman finds came to light in the municipality , there is no evidence of Roman or Gallo-Roman origins of the current location. The first church is dated to the Visigothic period; however, only the foundation walls of her have been excavated. One can assume that the place was originally near the medieval and still used cemetery and that it was established as a circulade in the 11th and 12th centuries around the castle, which is about a kilometer away and located on a hill.

Tour novels
  • The old town center of Puissalicon belongs to the type of Circulades - round villages that were built around a core consisting of a castle and / or church for defense reasons and whose outer, almost closed house front served as a replacement for an expensive city wall.
  • Nothing remains of the 11th century castle ( château ). Today's castle was built in various phases since the 14th century. You can still see two round stair towers and a residential wing ( corps de logis ) from the 16th century with rectangular windows and stone crosses.
  • The local parish church ( Église Notre Dame de Pitié or Notre Dame de Grâce ) dates from the 13th / 14th centuries. Century; it is one of the few examples of rural Gothic architecture in the south of France. It is the third church in town.
  • The second church belonged to a priory that had long since disappeared. It stood on the site of today's cemetery about a kilometer outside of today's town. Only the Tour romane , which was recognized as a Monument historique in 1862, has survived . It was built in the Lombard style and shows triplet windows ( triforias ) with inserted columns on all four sides . A transverse oval oculus on the upper floor is unusual .
