In the 19th century the place always had between 300 and 500 inhabitants. The phylloxera crisis and the mechanization of agriculture resulted in a persistent population decline in the first half of the 20th century.

economy

Agriculture and small crafts have shaped the economic life of the place for centuries. La Caunette is part of the Minervois wine region (AOC) , but wine sales in France have been declining since the 1990s, so that many farmers have returned to 'normal' farming.

history

It is believed that the origins of the place go back to the Visigothic times. The simple Romanesque church dates back to the 11th century.

Attractions

  • The parish church ( Église Notre-Dame ) on the outskirts is mentioned for the first time in a document from 1254. However, the simple construction dates back to the 11th century, but was modified repeatedly later - the bell tower was probably only added in the 14th or 15th century. A previous building from the Visigothic period is believed to have been in the same place . The earth in the cemetery directly adjacent to the church was poured in by human hands and stabilized by dry stone walls . The church has been recognized as a monument historique since 1972 .
  • The Château des Pardailhan is an unadorned two-and-a-half-storey building from the 17th or 18th century with a double external staircase.
