Lignan-sur-Orb ( Occitan : Linha d'Òrb ) is a commune in the Hérault department in the Occitanie region of France . It has 3,199 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) who are called "Lignanais" . Lignan-sur-Orb belongs to the arrondissement of Béziers and the canton of Béziers-2 .

geography

The municipality is located northwest of Béziers on the Orb River . Lignan-sur-Orb is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Thézan-lès-Béziers in the north and north-west, Corneilhan in the east and north-east, Béziers in the south and south-east and Maraussan in the west and south-west.

history

With the Roman invasion of Celtic Gaul in 52 BC, Lignan also became a Roman colony. 416 the place was conquered by the Visigoths. Destroyed by the Saracens in 725 and by Karl Martell in 736.
