In the 19th century the place always had between 500 and 800 inhabitants. The phylloxera crisis and the mechanization of agriculture led to a significant population decline in the first half of the 20th century, which is only slowly stabilizing again.

economy

Azillanet is one of the many small wine towns in the Minervois ; several winemakers offer wine tastings ( dégustations ). Since the 1960s tourism has played a certain role in the economic life of the municipality in the form of the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ).

history

Little information is available on the history of Azillanet. On October 25, 1591, a battle between Catholic and Protestant troops took place in the context of the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598) in the vicinity of Azillanet and Cesseras.

Attractions

  • In the center of Azillanet there are still some pretty medieval streets and corners.
  • Only one passage ( Porte de Couvent ) has survived from a medieval convent .
  • The St-Laurent church dates from the 17th century. The church tower should be older.
  • On the outskirts there are two other washhouses ( lavoirs ) from the 19th century ( Lavoir du Théron in the north and Lavoir du Tary in the south).
  • The place is well suited for hiking in the area with its vineyards and stone huts made of dry stone walls ( cabanes or capitelles ).
