Avène is a French commune with 287 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hérault department in the Occitanie region . It belongs to the arrondissement of Béziers and the canton of Clermont-l'Hérault .
geography
The municipality is located about 50 kilometers north of Béziers on the upper reaches of the Orb River and borders the neighboring Aveyron department . Neighboring municipalities are Ceilhes-et-Rocozels in the north, Joncels in the east, Lunas and Le Bousquet-d'Orb in the south-east, Camplong in the south, Graissesac in the south-west and Mélagues and Tauriac-de-Camarès in the west (Aveyron department).
The municipality is part of the Haut-Languedoc Regional Nature Park . Just above the village, the Orb is dammed up into the Réservoir d'Avène .

Healing spring
Avène is a traditional health resort due to its thermal spring . The “Sainte Odile” spring has been officially recognized as a medicinal water spring since 1874. More than 300 scientific studies have proven the skin-soothing, anti-irritant and anti-inflammatory effects of the Avène thermal water. Every year, more than 4,000 patients visit the Avène Thermal Clinic with neurodermatitis , psoriasis , eczema or skin burns.
