Saint-Félix church

Lézignan-Corbières is a municipality with 11,168 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Aude department in the Occitanie region of southern France .

geography

Lézignan is located in the Corbières area on the edge of the Minervois , around 40 meters above sea level. It is crossed by the river Jourre . Agriculture, mainly viticulture , is practiced in the area. The city has a small airport with a hard surface runway (1,000 meters).

history

The town church of Saint Félix de Gérone was built in the 13th century and rebuilt again and again in the following centuries. The town planning is ring-like, but incomplete on the north side. The south side of the ring is now a Napoléon III style square .

After the occupation of Vichy France by the German Wehrmacht in November 1942 , a command of the German Air Force took over the aforementioned airfield, which immediately, but for only four weeks, became home of the I. Group of Night Fighter Squadron 2 (I./NJG 2) was equipped with Ju 88C .

In the summer of 1943, Do 17 and DFS 230 - cargo gliders from the staff and I. Group of Luftlandegeschwader 1 (S. and I./LLG 1) were stationed here and in August also the special group of the same squadron.

The last unit of the Luftwaffe was the 4th Squadron of Kampfgeschwader 76 (4./KG 76), a Ju 88A unit, for a few weeks in the spring of 1944 .

Attractions

With the weekly market, Lézignan has a regional center function. There is a wine museum on the west side of the city. A regional consumer exhibition , the Promaude , takes place once a year in Lézignan-Corbières.
