In the 19th century the number of inhabitants rose from around 550 to over 2000 people. The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture have led to a continuous decline in population since then. The proximity to the city of Narbonne has led to an increase in the number of residents again in recent decades.
economy
A large part of the agricultural land is reserved for viticulture . Some of the hilly vineyards are within the protected designation of origin Corbières ; others are marketed through the Vin de Pays de l'Aude appellation. Some vacant houses have been converted into holiday apartments ( gîtes ).
history
Smaller Stone Age finds were made in the municipality that prove the presence of early humans.
In Roman times the wine already planted by Greek colonists became more and more widespread. In the 10th century there was still an estate ( villa rustica ) in Bician des Granoulières ; to defend against the Moors and other potential attackers, castles were built on several hilltops.
In the later Middle Ages, the Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens church was a priory church until it was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Narbonne in 1279 .
Attractions
- The small old town still contains a few stone houses.
- The existence of a parish church Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens ( Saint Peter in chains ) can be traced back to the 10th century. Today's quarry stone building dates from the 18th century - despite its Gothic-looking portal and the round tracery window above it .
- Surroundings
- The Château de Saint-Martin de Toques ( 43 ° 7 ′ 44 ″ N , 2 ° 52 ′ 8.8 ″ E ) , located imposingly on a hill, dates from the 12th and 14th centuries.
