In the 19th century the number of inhabitants rose from around 250 to over 500 people. The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture have since led to a continuous decline in population that peaked in the 1960s to 1980s. The proximity to the city of Narbonne has again led to a significant increase in the number of residents in recent decades.
economy
A large part of the agricultural land has been reserved for viticulture for centuries ; White, red and rosé wines are produced, which are marketed through the appellations Pays de l'Aude , Languedoc , Minervois , Le Pays Cathare and Pays d'Oc . Some vacant houses have been converted into holiday apartments (French Gîtes d'étape ).
history
The existence of a Romanesque church suggests a medieval settlement of the place.
Attractions
- The parish church of Saint-Sébastien dates back to the 11th century, but the interior of the church underwent profound changes in the 17th and 19th centuries. Noteworthy is the tower ( tour sarrasine ), which is the first in the Minervois not to be covered by a pointed helmet or a pyramid roof, as is usual , but ends in a flat terrace with parapet wall and corner decoration; other churches in the Minervois later followed suit (e.g. Cesseras et al.). The single nave nave houses a remarkable baroque altar and a baroque pulpit; there are also several carved figures - including one of St. Sebastian .
