IKEA hack

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The IKEA hack [- hæk ] is the name given to the individual redesign of kit furniture, especially from the Swedish furniture chain IKEA .

The aim here is to give the mass-sold furniture an individual design. This can be achieved through various measures. The spectrum ranges from the simple use of colors or fabrics to almost completely new furniture by processing the parts (e.g. by sawing), adding and combining furniture parts that you have made yourself, or assembling or using the furniture in an unforeseen way recombined with other furniture series.

The furniture from IKEA has become the namesake for this design method, as they are available almost identically around the world and different furniture series can be easily combined with one another thanks to repeated dimensions and connection types. This uniformity makes it possible for the “IKEA hackers” to create instructions that can be reproduced worldwide with the corresponding furniture kits.

The trend first appeared on the internet in the mid-2000s and became popular worldwide in the early 2010s. There are now several books on the subject.

In 2014, IKEA issued a warning against the ikeahackers.net website. The furniture company asked the operator to hand over the domain name to IKEA or to forego advertising. The operator decided to keep the site free of advertising.
