history
The name Argeliers means as much as clayey , which indicates extensive clay deposits in the area (excavation site and pottery museum Amphoralis in the neighboring municipality of Sallèles-d'Aude ). The clay deposits were already mined in Gallo-Roman times. Viticulture in the region also dates back to the time of the Gallia Narbonensis . Parts of the structure in the densely built-up town center date from the 12th century.
Argeliers became known nationwide as the starting point of the winemaking rebellion in Languedoc . The Comité d'Argeliers , also called Comité de défense viticole , founded by the winemaker and café owner Marcelin Albert (1871–1921) , gave the signal for the rebellion on March 11, 1907 with a march of 87 winemakers to Narbonne , with the intention of to come to a meeting with a parliamentary commission. The committee also decided to organize conferences and rallies across the region every Sunday.
