Jacques Gamelin (born October 3, 1738 in Carcassonne , † October 14, 1803 in Carcassonne) was a French painter , draftsman , engraver and etcher of early classicism . His works primarily address religious and ancient themes. He also painted portraits , battle pictures and genre scenes .

Gamelin first studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Toulouse under Jean-Pierre Rivalz . Further stations of his artistic training were Paris and Rome , where he worked as a professor at the Accademia di San Luca from 1771 . A year later, Pope appointed him Clement XIV. To court painter . In Rome, Gamelin also met the painter Anton Raphael Mengs , with whom he had a close friendship. In 1774 Gamelin returned to France. During the French Revolution he made portraits of the generals on the Pyrenees front , such as B. by General Dugommier (1800, Perpignan ).
