history
Not much is known about the history of the small and remote place. The place seems to have remained untouched by the Albigensian Crusade (1209–1229). In the 13th century, the abbey of Sainte-Marie de Lagrasse and secular landlords ( seigneurs ) shared the manorial rule over the place. In the 14th century there were repeated attacks from the Aragonese side.
Attractions
- The Château von Cascastel (or better: the castle tower) dates from the 12th century and is located on the outskirts above the - often dried up - river Berre. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the medieval castle was expanded to include a few more inconspicuous newer extensions; The rising bridge that connects the castle and town with the other side of the river may also date from this time. The walls of the tower are about 2.50 meters thick; the former entrance led - as is customary in the Middle Ages - to the first floor with its 8 meter high vaulted representation and ballroom. The basement was reserved for the guards. As part of a renovation, some window openings were made in the masonry to let more light into the two floors of the tower; On the river side, which is easy to defend, a narrow stone staircase embedded in the masonry leads up to the previously uncovered guard platform. The castle tower has been recognized as a monument historique since 1948 .
- The local winegrowers offer various options for wine tasting ( dégustation ).
