Muscat de Rivesaltes

Muscat de Rivesaltes , in Catalan Moscat de Ribesaltes , ( AOC since August 29, 1956) is a sweet wine from France. It can be produced in a total of 99 municipalities in the Pyrénées-Orientales ( Northern Catalonia ) and Aude departments in the Languedoc- Roussillongrowing region . The vineyard area covers approximately 4990 hectares .

The Muscat de Rivesaltes belongs to the Vin Doux Naturel family . Within the growing area, the Maury and Banyuls wines have the special status of a Grand Cru .

Soil and grape varieties

The vines stand on barren and calcareous soil, which allows only very low yields. Due to the size of the area, however, a generalized description of the soil is not possible.

Muscat blanc à petits grains and Muscat d'Alexandrie are permitted as grape varieties . The yield should not exceed 30 hl per hectare . However, this rule has been exceeded almost systematically since the 1993 vintage.

Manufacturing

First overripe grapes are harvested, which can already shrink like raisins on the vine. In order to preserve the natural sugar of the grapes , the must fermentation is stopped by adding ethanol . The wine is "fortified" with at least 15 percent alcohol. The residual sugar content of the wine is at least 100 g / liter.

In order to preserve the freshness and fruitiness of the muscatel varieties, it is bottled as early as possible, but not before December 15th of the harvest year. The wine should be drunk no later than two years after harvest. Light versions of the wine are very fragrant and have aromas of lemon and honey. Richer wines have a slightly bitter taste and their aroma is more reminiscent of oranges.

Muscat de Noël

Young Muscat de Rivesalt wines may be sold with the additional name Muscat de Noël from November 1st of the harvest year . Traditionally, this wine is drunk on Christmas ( Noël ) of the harvest year. The normal Muscat de Rivesaltes may only be sold from February 1st of the following year.
