Despite the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the loss of jobs due to the mechanization of agriculture , the population of the municipality rose continuously due to its relative proximity to the city of Perpignan.

economy

Traditionally, the residents lived as self-sufficient food from their (wine) fields and from a little cattle-raising (sheep, goats, chickens). The wines produced in the municipality today are marketed through various appellations . Since the middle of the 20th century, there has been income from tourism in the form of renting holiday apartments ( gîtes ).

history

Small prehistoric finds were made in the municipality; The Celts , Romans , Visigoths and Moors , on the other hand, left no traces. The first mention of the Sainte-Eugénie church comes from 1145; at that time the castle was owned by the bishops of Elne .

Attractions

  • The single-nave parish church of Sainte-Eugenie was built in the 12th century; However, it was later changed by a south porch and a new west facade with an attached bell gable ( clocher mur or espadanya ). Only the nave and the apse are Romanesque, but their stylistically idiosyncratic high blind arcades are a mystery to historians. Large parts of the structure have been recognized as a monument historique since 1964 .
  • Parts of the medieval castle ( château ) of the bishops of Elne are still preserved; the complex now serves as a hotel.
  • The city tower, made of bricks and rubble, but based on the shape of the Paris Eiffel Tower, dates from 1898–1900 . He wears a wrought iron 'crown'.
