Ortaffa ( Catalan Ortafà ) is a place and a municipality in the south of France with 1,481 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the old cultural landscape of Roussillon in what is now the Pyrénées-Orientales department in the Occitania region .

location

The place Ortaffa is located on the north bank of the Tech at an altitude of about 40 m above sea level. d. M. on the eastern edge of the Pyrenees . The place is around 15 kilometers (driving distance) south of Perpignan ; the old episcopal city of Elne is about six kilometers northeast.

Small prehistoric finds were made in the municipality; The Celts , Romans , Visigoths and Moors , on the other hand, left no traces. The first mention of the Sainte-Eugénie church comes from 1145; at that time the castle was owned by the bishops of Elne .

  • The single-nave parish church of Sainte-Eugenie was built in the 12th century; However, it was later changed by a south porch and a new west facade with an attached bell gable ( clocher mur or espadanya ).
