Cabestany is a town in the south of France and a municipality with 10,106 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Pyrénées-Orientales department of the Occitania region in the historic province of Roussillon .
Location and climate
The town and municipality are located in the coastal plain between the rivers Têt and Réart at an altitude of about 30 m ; the city of Perpignan is around 6 km (driving distance) west and the Mediterranean coast is only 15 km away. The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 585 mm / year) falls mainly in the winter half-year.

The phylloxera crisis and the increasing mechanization of agriculture led to a lack of jobs in the first half of the 20th century and, as a consequence, to a significant decline in the population. The resurgence of the population since the 1960s is mainly due to its proximity to the greater Perpignan area.
economy
In earlier times, the residents of the village lived on the produce of their fields and gardens as self-sufficiency; Surplus could be sold in the city of Perpignan. Large parts of the municipality were covered by shallow coastal lakes (étangs) , which subsequently silted up. The arable land created in this way is mainly used for viticulture, but increasingly also for the construction of holiday apartments.
history
Small prehistoric and ancient Roman finds were made in the municipality; the place was on the Via Domitia . The first written mention of the place name comes from the year 927; the first mention of an Église Sainte-Marie is in 1089. In the 11th and 12th centuries, the disputed area between France and the Kingdom of Aragón belonged to Aragón, from 1229 to 1344 to the Kingdom of Mallorca and then again to Aragón or the Kingdom Spain. Only after several armed conflicts was final affiliation to France agreed in the Peace of the Pyrenees of 1659.
Attractions
The place owes its fame to the Master of Cabestany , an unknown sculptor of the 12th century whose works - according to many researchers - can be found not only in southern France, but also in Spain and Italy. The Notre-Dame des Anges church is home to a fragment of a tympanum found in 1930, the most famous work of this artist.
