Despite the phylloxera crisis in viticulture, the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms, the number of inhabitants has remained more or less constant.

economy

For centuries, the community was almost exclusively agricultural. Viticulture traditionally plays a particularly important role. The municipality belongs to the wine-growing regions of Côtes du Roussillon-Villages and Rivesaltes ; however, the wines produced here may also be marketed under other appellations .

history

Small prehistoric finds were made in a cave in the municipality; There are also indications of the existence of Roman and Visigoth settlements. A field name suggests the presence of the Moors - even if only briefly . The names Villa Stagello and Estagellum have been handed down from the Middle Ages . From 1258 ( Treaty of Corbeil ) to 1659 ( Peace in the Pyrenees ), Estagel was a border town between the kingdoms of France and Aragón and Spain .

Attractions

  • The construction of the Église Saint-Étienne-et-Saint-Vincent began in 1319; destroyed in later border conflicts, it was rebuilt from 1602 onwards. The portal tower with a two-part bell gable (clocher mur) is particularly striking . The three-aisled church houses several baroque altars and has been recognized as a monument historique since 1926 .
  • A few meters southwest of the village was a Visigothic cemetery from the 5th / 6th centuries. It was discovered in the 19th century and has been recognized as a Monument historique since 2005 .
Surroundings
  • The partially pre-Romanesque Église Saint-Vincent consists entirely of (plastered) rubble stones ; it has a south porch, which was added later.
