Côtes du Roussillon-Villages

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Côtes du Roussillon-Villages wine-growing region extends over the northern part of the Pyrénées-Orientales department within the Roussillon wine-growing region and is thus north of the city of Perpignan . The vineyards cover 2,571 hectares in 32 municipalities. The area has had the status of an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC for short) since March 28, 1977 . In the south the area borders on the Côtes du Roussillon appellation . In the north, the Languedoc appellations include Corbières and Fitou . The vineyards are typically located on slopes along the Agly , Verdouble and Maury rivers . Only red wines are produced.

Four municipalities are allowed to mark their names there in the form of Côtes du Roussillon Villages Caramany , Côtes du Roussillon Villages Latour de France , Côtes du Roussillon Villages Lesquerde and Côtes du Roussillon Villages Tautavel on the label and thus enjoy the special status of a communal appellation.

In general, a harvest restriction of 45 hectoliters / hectare is prescribed. The long-term mean, however, is a low 38 hectoliters / hectare.

red wine

Red wines must be blended from at least three grape varieties , including two main varieties (→ Cuvée ). The main varieties are Carignan (since 1993 its share has been a maximum of 60%), Grenache and Lledoner Pelut . Syrah and Mourvèdre are considered secondary varieties . The combined share of the Syrah and Mourvèdre varieties is at least 30%.

Since 2002 the varieties Cinsault and the white Macabeo are no longer permitted.

The spectrum of wines produced is wide and ranges from fruity wines that have to be drunk young to very high-quality top wines that are matured in barriques and have a good shelf life.

The minimum alcohol content is 12.0% by volume.
