economy
The main livelihoods of the residents of Caramany are agriculture and forestry and, above all, viticulture on the sun-drenched southern slopes.
Viticulture
Together with the villages of Lesquerde , Latour-de-France and Tautavel , Caramany plays a special role within the large wine-growing area of the Côtes du Roussillon-Villages , because their wines are considered to be of particularly high quality and may be marketed under the respective place name. The grape varieties Syrah , Grenache and Carignan are grown , with which mainly red wines are produced. The construction of the reservoir between 1988 and 1994 - allegedly - contributed to the climatic stabilization and thus to the improvement of the wine quality.
tourism
Although the place cannot be described as a tourist destination in the traditional sense, wine tourism and the rental of holiday homes ( gîtes ) play an important role in the economic life of the small community.
history
During the construction of a reservoir that dams the river Agly at the foot of the village, many finds from the Neolithic - including a necropolis - were made, which indicates an intensive settlement of the area as early as 2000 BC. Chr. Indicates.
Until 870, the Fenouillèdes still belonged to the historic County of Razès , after which it came into the possession of the Counts of Cerdagne . Caramany is first mentioned in 1085; in 1242 Hugues de Caraman is one of the most important landlords ( seigneurs ) in the area. By the Treaty of Corbeil (1258) the Fenouillèdes was added to the Languedoc - controlled by the French crown . The Caramany Castle thus became a kind of border post to the Kingdom of Aragón until the Peace of the Pyrenees was signed in 1659 .
In the course of the French Revolution , the Fenouillèdes - together with the other five comarcas of Northern Catalonia - was added to the newly created Pyrénées Orientales department.
Attractions
- The townscape with its narrow, steep and winding streets still looks medieval in parts.
- At the Porte rebellious the device is still for lowering a - - long lost case grating recognizable.
- The 17th century Maison Chauvet is the largest in the city; it belonged to a wealthy drapery family.
- The Église Saint-Étienne dates from the 15th or 16th century, but was fundamentally revised in the 19th century. The bell tower with its peculiar tip, which is strongly reminiscent of a four-sided bell gable , was only added by the residents of the village on their own in the middle of the 19th century. The single-nave interior surprises with its partly baroque furnishings (altar, sculptures, pictures, etc.).
- The reservoir ( barrage ) was completed between 1988 and 1994.
