Mont-Louis (in Catalan : Montlluís or earlier el Vilar d'Ovansa ) is a southern French municipality with 152 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Pyrénées-Orientales department of the Occitania region . Since July 7, 2008, the citadel and the city walls, which are part of the fortifications of Vauban , have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

location

Mont-Louis is located at an average altitude of 1,600 m above sea level (1,516 to 1,608 m) in the canton of the same name, Mont-Louis , which in turn belongs to the Prades arrondissement . The community is located on the right bank of the Têt , 11 km north of the Spanish border. The municipality is part of the Pyrénées Catalanes Regional Natural Park ; the park administration is also located here.

history

The place was founded in the 12th century. The fortress was built from 1681 to 1691 according to plans by Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban in order to secure the strategically important traffic routes nearby, including those to Bourg-Madame and Font-Romeu-Odeillo-Via . The citadel has been used by the Center National d'Entraînement Commando (CNEC) of the French armed forces since 1964 .

In 1723 the theater historian and writer Antoine de Léris was born in Mont-Louis .

The church of Mont-Louis was built between 1733 and 1737.

In the 1920s, the Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh spent part of his poor retirement in Mont-Louis; it created pictures u. a. in Fetges (a little below Mont-Louis). The stay here and in Ille-sur-Têt will i. A. summarized on the stay in and around Port Vendres .

In 1948, the French engineer Félix Trombe began experiments in Mont-Louis to build a solar furnace . His first prototype, completed in 1949, had an output of 50  kW and is still inside the fortress today.
