geography
Bourg-Madame is located at 1150 meters in the wide high valley of the Cerdagne , where the national road N20 meets the Segre river , and right on the border with Spain .
history
A pre-Romanesque church (l'église d'Hix) is mentioned here as early as 839. In 1177 the Count of Barcelona and the Cerdanya had a fortress built to protect the area administratively, commercially and militarily.
In the Pyrenees Treaty of 1659, the eastern part of the Cerdanya fell to France and the previously so-called municipality of Hix became a border town. It was not until 1815 that Hix was renamed Bourg-Madame in honor of the wife of the Count of Angoulême , Marie-Thérèse-Charlotte de France ("Madame Royale"). She was the daughter of King Louis XVI. and Marie Antoinettes .
