Cerdanya county
The county of Cerdanya , in Catalan Comtat de Cerdanya , was one of the Catalan counties that emerged from the Spanish marrow of Charlemagne . Between the years 789 and 870 it was ruled by the Counts of Urgell . Later it was owned by a younger branch of the count family of Barcelona , who also ruled the counties of Besalú , Conflent and Berga .

Cerdanya is united with the crown of Aragon . In 1276 King James I of Aragon bequeathed the county to his younger son, the King of Mallorca .

Crown of Aragon / Kingdom of France
In 1462 the Treaty of Bayona between Louis XI. closed by France and John II of Aragon . In this treaty, John II pledged the counties of Roussillon and Cerdanya to pay for a delivery of arms and a military operation worth 300,000 crowns to the King of France. Louis XI. of France invaded the counties of Roussillon and Cerdanya in 1463. In the Treaty of Barcelona of January 19, 1493, the Catholic Kings and Charles VIII of France agreed to return the counties of Roussillon and Cerdanya to the Crown of Aragon . In the Peace of the Pyrenees in 1659, the handover of the parts of Catalonia north of the Pyrenees , including the county of Cerdanya, to France was finally agreed.
