Wilhelm-Jordan (Cerdanya)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilhelm-Jordan (Catalan Guillem Jordà , actually just Wilhelm (Guillem) ; † 1109 ) was a count of Cerdanya from 1095 to 1099 and regent in the county of Tripoli from 1105 . He was the son of Count Wilhelm Raimund (Guillem Ramon) and Sancha (Sança) of Barcelona.

He accompanied Raimund IV of Toulouse, his mother's half-brother, on the First Crusade, and when Raimund died in 1105, after acclamation by the soldiers, he took over rule in the county of Tripoli on the grounds that the eldest son, Bertrand of Toulouse , was not in the country and the second son, Alfons Jordan of Toulouse , whom Raimund lord of Mons Peregrinus (Pilgrim's Mountain), the castle that Raimund had built in 1103 and made Tortosa , was a minor.

After the barons in the county of Toulouse had spoken out in favor of Alfonso and against Bertrand as the successor of Raimund, Bertrand traveled to the east. In 1108 he arrived at Mons Peregrinus Castle to take up his inheritance. In the now erupting dispute with Wilhelm - also about the still unconquered city of Tripoli itself - Wilhelm allied himself with Tankred of Tiberias , the regent of the Principality of Antioch , while Bertrand turned to King Baldwin I of Jerusalem as an arbitrator. Baldwin I, Balduin du Bourg and Joscelin von Courtenay stood behind Bertrand, Tankred was forced to give in, and at the same time it was decided that he had to give up his claims to the county of Edessa (but was allowed to remain regent in Antioch).

The county of Tripoli was divided between Wilhelm and Bertrand with the stipulation that each should rule the land that he himself had conquered. After the dispute was settled, the crusaders were able to take up the siege of the city, which was then captured with the help of Genoa on July 12, 1109.

Wilhelm-Jordan died shortly after the city fell from an arrow shot, and Bertrand assumed sole rule, although he was suspected (unprovable) of having committed the murder of Wilhelm-Jordan.

The second part of his name was Wilhelm-Jordan after he was baptized a second time in the Jordan .
