Oliba Cabreta
Oliba Cabreta († 990 ) was a count of Cerdanya , Conflent and Besalú from the house of Barcelona . He was the third of the four sons of Miró the Younger , Count of Cerdanya , Conflent and Besalú , and his wife Ava. His brothers were Sunifred II , Wilfried II and Miró Bonfill .
Oliba inherited his brother Sunifred II in 966 in the counties of Cerdanya and Conflent and in 984 Miró Bonfill in the county of Besalú. His nickname means something like “billy goat” ( Gabra in Catalan ) because he is said to have had the habit of scratching holes in the earth with his feet like a goat as soon as he got angry. This should illustrate his warlike and violent nature. He waged a long war against Roger I of Carcassonne over the regions of Capcir , Donezan , Peyrepertuse and Sault . In 988, Oliba made a pilgrimage to Rome to confess his sins to St. Romuald and was moved by him to renounce worldly life. He entered as a Benedictine monk of the Abbey of Montecassino at where he died 990th
Oliba's wife was named Ermengarde, with whom he had four sons:
- Bernard I. Tallaferro († 1020), Count of Besalú.
- Wilfried II. († 1046/49), Count of Cerdanya and Conflent.
- Oliba the Abbot († 1046), Count of Berga, Abbot of Sant Miquel de Cuixà and Santa Maria de Ripoll , Bishop of Vic (Osona) .
- Berengar († 1003), Bishop of Elne .
