Wilfried II (Besalú)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilfried II ( Catalan Guifré ; † 957 ) was a Count of Besalú from the House of Barcelona . He was the second of the four sons of Miró the Younger , Count of Cerdanya , Conflent and Besalú , and his wife Ava. His brothers were Sunifred II , Oliba Cabreta and Miró Bonfill .

Wilfried inherited the county of Besalú from his father, while Cerdanya and Conflent went to his older brother Sunifred II. In 951 Wilfried traveled to Rome together with the abbot of the newly founded Abbey of Sant Pere of Camprodon to have Pope Agapitus II confirm the new founding . On their way back they had moved to the court of King Ludwig IV in Reims , who gave the abbey a few privileges on February 3, 952. Wilfried is the last Catalan count whose presence at the Franconian royal court is documented.

In 957 Wilfried was murdered by his own vassals; Besalú was taken over by his brother Sunifred II.
