National route 20
The N20 is a French national road that was established in 1824 between Paris and the Spanish border near Bourg-Madame. It goes back to route 23 impériale. Their length was 945 kilometers. It has been moved to many bypasses over time. In the 1990s, expressway sections were built around places between Vierzon and Brive-la-Gaillarde and parallel to the national road between them. These became the A20, which is one of the toll-free motorways in France due to this origin. In 2006 the national road between Paris and the A66 near Pamiers was graduated. Furthermore, the N20 has been running through the Tunnel de Puymorens since 1994 instead of the Col de Puymorens. In Spain it continues on the N-152, which originally ran to Granollers.

N20a
The N20 A was set as a level crossing in Pierre-Buffière in 1933. Due to the parallel transfer, the downgrade soon followed. In 1972, the through-town of the N20 from Orléans became the N20 A , as it was moved to a bypass road. It was downgraded to the D920 in 1973.

Course of the road
|
Today's N520 exists in two parts as a connecting road between the A20 motorway, which goes back to the N20, and other national roads. One section runs from junction 33 to national road 21 on the north bank of La Vienne through Limoges and the other section as a northwest bypass of Limoges from junction 28 to national road 141. The north-west bypass is the D2000, which was upgraded in 2006. From 1992 to 2006 the boulevard ring around Limoges between junction 30 and the N21 was also part of the N520. Today the streets are communal streets.
N1020
The N1020 was a branch of the N20 from 1978 to 2000, which arose from the old route of the N20 between Donzenac and Brive-la-Gaillarde when it was placed on the parallel expressway that is now the A20.
N2020
The N2020 was the old route of the N20 through the villages between 1986 and 2006, when it was placed on bypass roads or replaced by the A20. From 1986 the old route was signposted parallel to the newly emerging A20. In 1989 the town through Montauban became the N2020. Three years later, the section between Vierzon and Massay was renumbered to N2020. This was done in 1997 for the section between Rhodes and La Poste and most recently in 2001 for the passage from Foix.
