Arcueil [ aʁ.kœj ] is a French commune with 21,501 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) south of Paris and belongs to the Val-de-Marne department in the Île-de-France region . The distance to the center of Paris is about five and a half kilometers. The former village of Arcueil was urbanized in the middle of the 19th century, which is why the cityscape today is characterized by the juxtaposition of very different types of buildings and architectural styles. Arcueil is traditionally a place of residence for the workers . The municipality has a high proportion of social housing and the population has a high proportion of immigrants , but in recent years there has been an increased tendency towards gentrification .

Three aqueducts define the cityscape of Arcueil, two of which are still in use today: the Gallo-Roman aqueduct, the Aqueduc Médicis from the 17th century and the Aqueduc de la Vanne from the 19th century. In Arcueil, the Fort de Montrouge is located on a military site; it cannot be visited.
