Up until the 20th century, Valenton was a small village, until 1936 when the quarters of Vignes and Val Pompadour were built.

Valenton has been a stronghold of the French Communist Party since the 1920s. With the exception of the time of the German occupation of France and the time of the Vichy government, the PCF always provided the mayor.
