Gentilly is a French city with 18,605 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017), located in the department of Val-de-Marne in the region Ile-de-France .
Geographical location
The city is located about four kilometers south of Paris city center. It is bounded in the north by the Paris ring road and in the east by the A6b motorway. The Bièvre river crosses the urban area underground.
history
In 1860 part of the city was incorporated into Paris and in 1869 another part was spun off as Le Kremlin-Bicêtre , which meant that it lost three quarters of its area. Since the industrialization of the region in the 19th century, the place, like many other Parisian suburbs (banlieue rouge) , has been a center of the labor movement. Since 1934, with the exception of the German occupation, all mayors have come from the ranks of the French Communist Party (PCF) . In the 1970s, numerous immigrants from Portugal and Spain as well as from the Maghreb settled here .
