Vitry-sur-Seine is a French city with 93,557 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Val-de-Marne department and a southern suburb of Paris in the Île de France region .

geography

Vitry-sur-Seine is located on the west bank of the Seine , just before the Marne flows into it. The distance to the center of Paris is about ten kilometers. The city stretches from a hilly area that is still largely green today to the Port-à-l'Anglais on the Seine, the port that was built in the 13th century and where the city's industrial area is located. The soil of the municipal area contains gypsum and lime deposits, which were exploited into the 20th century. The city is also known for its vineyard and for its figs and lilacs.

Neighboring municipalities are Ivry-sur-Seine , Alfortville , Choisy-le-Roi , Thiais , Chevilly-Larue and Villejuif .

history

Like other French places called Vitry, the name is of Roman origin; at Vitry, a battle that was victorious for the Romans took place at the time of the Roman invasion of Gaul, who then named the place Victoriacum (the name for this place has only been documented since the 9th century). Since the end of the 14th century, the name of the place was Vitry-près-Paris , until the municipality was officially renamed Vitry-sur-Seine in 1897. The strategically important bridge on the Seine, Pont-à-l'Anglais, was the scene of several battles, for example in 1358 when the Dauphin's troops fought here against the troops of Charles of Navarre , and in 1434 when the Burgundians and Armagnacs faced each other here. Control of the crossing of the Seine from Vitry also played an important role during Bartholomew's Night in 1572 and the Fronde uprising in 1652.

With industrialization , Vitry developed into a classic working class suburb of Paris, which has had a communist city administration since 1925 . 736 people died in the First World War and 422 people died in the Second World War. In 1901 there were 9,894 inhabitants in the city, especially after the Second World War the number rose sharply and reached 86,000 in 1975. Since the 1970s, Vitry, like other communities in the Parisian banlieue , developed into a social hotspot. The immigration from the Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa caused a conflict, economic crises for a relatively high unemployment . The demolition of a settlement mainly inhabited by foreigners in 1980 led to massive protests against communist mayor Paul Mercieca. The violent death of 15-year-old Abdelkader that same year also increased tensions between the ethnic groups in Vitry. In December 2001, after the death of a boy from Vitry, there were another five days of serious rioting, in which several dozen cars were set on fire. In 2002, 17-year-old Sohane Benziane was burned alive in Vitry ; this was the reason for the Ni Putes Ni Soumises movement , which campaigns for the rights of migrant women. Vitry was largely spared from the riots of 2005 .
