history
In ancient times the river was called Matrona after the Celtic river goddess of the same name . According to Julius Caesar , the Matrona with the lower reaches of the Sequana (Seine) was the border between the Belgians and the Gauls proper .
The German troops could be stopped here during the First World War (" Marnewunder "). There were numerous battles in this area until 1918.
shipping
The lower reaches of the Marne are even navigable by ships. Further up the river, navigability is made possible by the construction of canals that use the waters of the Marne. these are
- the Canal latéral à la Marne and
- the Canal between Champagne et Bourgogne .
Once an important shipping route, it is connected to the Rhine , Maas , Moselle , Aisne and Saône by other canals .
