The Aisne [ ɛn ] is a river in France , in the north of the country, that runs through the Grand Est and Hauts-de-France regions.
geography
It rises in the Argonne massif, in the municipality of Rembercourt-Sommaisne and generally drains in a westerly direction. After around 356 kilometers, the Aisne joins the Oise at Compiègne . The confluence with the shorter Oise is 99.15 km before its confluence with the Seine. Since the Aisne, together with the Aire, which is longer at the confluence, has a flow path of 362 km, this results in a longest flow path of 460 km for the Oise system.

From the estuary to Condé-sur-Aisne , the river is navigable by ships. Further up, it is accompanied by the Canal latéral à l'Aisne to Vieux-lès-Asfeld and then by the Canal des Ardennes to Vouziers .
history
In ancient times the river was still called the Axona . During the Gallic War , Julius Caesar defeated a Celtic army of the Belgians here in the Battle of Axona .
During the First World War , the region on the Aisne was fiercely fought over, especially in September 1914 , spring 1917 and May / June 1918.
On June 9 and 10, 1940 there was also a battle on the Aisne .
