Course and technical infrastructure

The Canal latéral à l'Aisne begins at Vieux-lès-Asfeld , where it meets its transition from the Canal des Ardennes (German: Ardennes Canal ). It is a canal of the side canal type and accompanies the Aisne River for 53 kilometers . It overcomes a height difference of 18 meters with the help of 8 locks and flows into the Aisne river at Condé-sur- Aisne, which can be navigated directly by ships from there to its confluence with the Oise near Compiègne . In Berry-au-Bac it meets the Canal de l'Aisne à la Marne (German: Aisne-Marne Canal ), which opens up further connections to the south of France. The Canal de l'Oise à l'Aisne (German: Oise-Aisne Canal ) branches off at Bourg-et-Comin and opens up north-west France and the Belgian coast.
