history

The place known in Gallo-Roman times under the name Castrum Conthense came to Count Theobald III in 1200n . the champagne . His widow, Blanka of Navarre , had the castle hill (the "butte") fortified. This fortification was reinforced by Girolamo Marini at the time of King Francis I. The city, built entirely of wood, burned down in 1719. The reconstruction was carried out by the royal engineer Philippe de la Force.

At the time of the French Revolution , Sainte-Menehould was a post office on the road from Paris to Verdun, where the overland stagecoaches changed horses.

On the evening of June 22, 1792 made postmaster Jean Baptiste Drouet a group of tourists from that of a Berline , a buggy and several riding couriers existed and it had obviously in a hurry. Although the passports were issued to a real Baroness von Korff , Drouet recognized the travelers in pictures shortly after their departure: They were King Louis XVI. of France and Queen Marie-Antoinette on their flight abroad. Drouet had the following post relays and garrisons alerted, so that the royal couple could be arrested in Varennes-en-Argonne that night .

Church Notre-Dame-du-Château

The Notre-Dame-du-Château church in the upper town dates from the 13th century. It is a three-aisled basilica. The central nave of the choir and the polygonal apse date from the beginning of this century, while the side chapels of the choir were only added in the middle of the century. The five-bay ship was modified in the 15th and 18th centuries. The building is listed as a monument historique .

The town hall (Hôtel de Ville) on the Place du Général Leclerc was built by Philippe de La Force in 1730 after the fire of 1719. The front is considered a good example of the style of the royal agency of Jules Hardouin-Mansart , Robert de Cotte and Jacques Gabriel.

Kellermann's statue near Valmy

The village of Valmy is located 10 km west of Sainte-Menehould. This place is known for the cannonade near Valmy , the turning point of the first coalition war . From the windmill on a hill you have a good panoramic view of the otherwise flat land. The windmill, built in 1634, was burned down by Kellermann on September 20, 1792, as he needed this highest point to observe the enemy positions. Since then, the windmill has been rebuilt or restored four times, the last time after it was destroyed by Hurricane Lothar on December 26, 1999.

Just 400 m east of the windmill is the Kellermann monument , which commemorates one of the two French commanders in the battle of 1792.

Town twinning
