Vassimont-et-Chapelaine is a French commune with 61 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Marne department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Champagne-Ardenne ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Châlons-en-Champagne and the Châlons-en-Champagne municipal association founded in 2016 . The inhabitants are called Vassimoniots .

geography

The municipality of Vassimont-et-Chapelaine is located 25 kilometers southwest of the departmental capital Châlons-en-Champagne and 35 kilometers west of Vitry-le-François in the Champagne sèche , the "dry Champagne". The upper Somme , a tributary of the Marne, flows through the municipality . The municipal area of ​​21.73 km² is woodless except for the gallery forests on the Somme and is characterized by large-scale fields on mostly flat ground relief. The Haut de Rachère elevation in the south of the municipality marks the highest point in the municipality at 178 m above sea level. The Vaure rises near this elevation , a small tributary of the Maurienne , which drains over the Superbe to the Aube . Vassimont-et-Chapelaine is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Soudron in the north, Bussy-Lettrée in the northeast, Haussimont in the southeast, Montépreux in the south, Connantray-Vaurefroy in the southwest and Lenharrée in the northwest.

history

The formerly independent municipality of Chapelaine had ten inhabitants in 1806 and was merged with Vassimont to form the municipality of Vassimont-et-Chapelaine in 1810. In September 1914, during the First Battle of the Marne , the community was in the middle of the battlefield.
