history
The origins of today's Châlons Vatry airport go back to 1950. At the beginning of the Cold War, there was a massive upgrade, including the construction of new NATO - military airfields belonged. Construction of the field began in 1953, and the field was designed to accommodate 50 fighter planes.
Vatry Air Base was operated by the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE). The base was intended as an alternate area and was therefore never used as a permanent station for combat aircraft. The squadrons rotating through Vatry belonged in particular to the 21st , 48th , 49th and 388th fighter-bomber squadrons.
USAFE ceased operations in 1959 and the area was handed over to the US Army in 1960 . After France left the military structure of the Alliance, the Americans left the base in 1967 and the base was closed.
Then the airfield served the French Armée de l'air as a training facility.
At the turn of the millennium, it was converted to a civil airfield. He has served cargo airlines and low-cost airlines ever since . Currently (2017) the airport is served by Atlantique Air Assistance , Jetairfly and Ryanair .
The Airbus company completed a few flight tests of their then new A350 here in 2013 .
