The Aéroport Avignon-Provence (formerly Aéroport d'Avignon - Caumont ) is an airport in the southern French Département Vaucluse in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region , around 8 km southeast of Avignon . It is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Flight connections

Since 2013, the airport has not been served from German-speaking countries. It is served seasonally by the British airlines Flybe and Jet2 . Destinations are Southampton , Exeter , Leeds and Edinburgh . It is also home to the charter transport company Transport Air and the Aéro-Club Vauclusien flight club .

history

The airport opened in 1937. In 1948 the first regular flight connection to Paris was started. In 1989 a new control tower was built. The Aéro-Club Vauclusien settled on the airfield that year. In 1990 the terminal was expanded. In 1997 the north runway was extended to 1,880 meters.

In addition to the airport at Caumont-sur-Durance, there is another airport, the Aérodrome d'Avignon-Pujaut , six kilometers north of Avignon .

Avignon-Pujaut Airport

This aerodrome has three grass runways and is a List 3 aerodrome, a place of restricted use.

After the occupation of Vichy France by the German Wehrmacht at the end of 1942 during World War II , Avignon-Pujaut became an airfield of the German Air Force . For air defense in November 1942 and between August 1943 and mid-June 1944, with a short break in May / June, initially the 2nd and also in May / June 1944 the 4th squadron of the initially only with Bf 109F / G and later also Fw 190A equipped Jagdgruppe Süd . In addition, the 2nd season of Jagdgruppe West came during this time .
