history
The airport was first mentioned at the beginning of the 20th century. Before the Second World War, it was home to the Aeroclub Basque.
During the war, the Luftwaffe used the space after the end of the western campaign . At first, at the end of 1940, it was home to the 2nd squadron of reconnaissance group 41 and from spring 1941 for some time the base of the 2nd squadron of reconnaissance group 12.
Between 1943 and February 1944, Biarritz was the base of the 2nd squadron of Jagdgruppe West and then until mid-May 1944 of the group staff of the same unit. The group was equipped with Bf 109E / F / G and Fw 190A .
Later in 1944, the airport was bombed by the German Air Force and had to be rebuilt. In 1948 the first regular flight connection Biarritz – Paris was taken up by the Société Africaine de Transports Aériens (SATA). In 1962 the runway was extended. The airport officially got the status of an international airport in 1977. In 1994 a new terminal was opened with a total area of over 6000 m². The airport wants to be prepared for a capacity of over one million passengers.

The airport is served by Air France , easyJet , Lufthansa , Luxair , Ryanair , SAS , Swiss and Volotea . In the German-speaking area Basel-Mulhouse , Berlin-Tegel and Munich are controlled.
Transport links
There are regular bus connections from the airport to Anglet , Biarritz and Bayonne . A connection to the SNCF is available in Bayonne .
Incidents
- On March 4, 1999, came Boeing 737-228 of Air France ( air vehicle registration number F-GBYA) on the flight from Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport Biarritz side of the runway from where the nose gear buckled. After another 400 meters, the aircraft came to a stop. None of the 97 occupants were harmed, but the machine had to be written off as a total loss.
