Anglet ( French , Basque Angelu ) is a French city with 38,929 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The city is located in the Bayonne arrondissement . Until 2015 it was the main town (French: chef-lieu ) of the two cantons Anglet-Nord and Anglet-Sud and is now the administrative seat ( Bureau centralisateur ) of the newly formed canton Anglet and part of the newly formed canton Bayonne-1 .

The city is located in the center of the city triangle "BAB" ( Biarritz , Anglet, Bayonne ) on the Adour River and on the Atlantic ( Bay of Biscay ). The Biarritz airport is partly in the city of Anglet.

Younger story

Since the Second World War, when Anglet was still a shadowy tourist destination, the community has attracted more and more visitors. In contrast to the densely built-up old town centers of Biarritz and Bayonne, land in Anglet was inexpensive and in good locations to buy. The slow onset of mass tourism steadily increased demand, so that the population jumped from 12,603 (in 1954) to 38,633 (2014).

In the meantime, the entire region of Biarritz, through the various smaller centers of Anglet and the old town of Bayonne, is, with a few exceptions, continuously populated and built up, the agricultural character of the small town has been a thing of the past. Today Anglet, together with the cities mentioned, as well as Boucau and Bidart , is part of the Côte Basque-Adour metropolitan region, which has 126,000 inhabitants .

Town twinning

Anglet has had a German twin town since 1968: the Central Franconian government capital Ansbach .
