history
The curtain wall of a fortified camp from early history , which has four lines of defense, is a testimony to early settlement. An oval elevation, surrounded by a moat and a parapet, forms the center of the complex.
Béguios appears in the writings under the toponyms Bigaoos (1105), Bigaos (1119), Bigios (1125), Beguios (1150), Sanctus Petrus de Bigios (1160), Biguios (1176, copial book of the Abbey of Saint-Jean de Sorde ), Beyos (13th century, Duchesne collection), Beios (early 13th century, copy book from Bayonne), Beguio s (1316), Beguiuos (1513, documents from Pamplona ) and Beygoyz (1621, after Martin de Viscay). On the map of Cassini 1750 the municipality is entered as Beguios, listed as Begnios during the French Revolution in 1793, and eight years later as Beguios and Béguios during the French Consulate .
The Luxe family were the feudal lords in the Middle Ages . Today nothing can be seen of their manor house, as it was probably destroyed during the Huguenot Wars .
Population development
After the peak of 690 inhabitants in 1831, the number has declined by about a third to this day.

Attractions
- Church dedicated to the apostle Simon Peter . The original church, built in the 12th century, was replaced by a new building in the 18th century. The nave is generously dimensioned in view of the size of the community. Renovations at the beginning of the 19th century repaired the damage that had occurred during the French Revolution. In the course of this, new stained glass windows were created, three of which are distinguished, depicting doctors of the church . In the first window a teacher is reading something from an open book. It is believed that it is Francis de Sales , the founder of the Order of the Visitation of Mary together with Johanna Franziska von Chantal . The second window probably shows Francis of Assisi , recognizable by the large cross that symbolizes his special piety . Above this window there is another window as a medallion , which obviously shows Antony of Padua with the baby Jesus in his arms. His habitual attribute is his robe, which identifies him as a Franciscan . The altarpiece in the Baroque style dates from the 18th century and the plundering and pillaging during the French Revolution has escaped. It is imposing in size with a multitude of braided columns and niches that hold statues of saints. The splendid impression is underlined by gold and red colors. The painting in the middle of the altarpiece, which shows the crucifixion of Jesus Christ , forms a sober contrast to this. Below the top is a tabernacle from the 18th century, which harmonizes with the top thanks to its baroque style and color. It is surmounted by a semi-dome that stands on braided pillars made of red and gold. The palm branches inside the half-dome, symbols of martyrs , are in harmony with the crucified Christ in the painting above. In a chapel there is a memorial in memory of the French soldiers who died in World War I. The Pietà on the pedestal draws a parallel between the sacrifice of the soldiers and the sacrifice of Christ. A disc-shaped grave stele can be found in the adjacent cemetery , which is not a tomb as usual, but was created and erected in the 20th century for commemorations. It expresses the mixture of two cultural traditions, the Christian and the Basque. The disk is decorated with geometric motifs and floral ornaments, while a cross is carved in the base, reminiscent of the order of the Hospital of St. John in Jerusalem .
- Way chapel, dedicated to Mary, the mother of Jesus . The Marian apparitions in Lourdes led to an increase in Marian devotion. That is why such chapels are usually set up in honor of Our Lady. This chapel, which looks like a miniature model of a Basque church, is a testament to the piety of the Basques.
- Wayside cross. On the one hand, it shows the solidarity of the population with Christianity and at the same time serves as a guide. This cross of the ways is obviously always a place of prayer, as the flowers testify, which decorate a small sanctuary at the foot of the cross, protected from the wind, which is fenced with wrought iron.
