coat of arms

Coat of arms of Domezain-Berraute

The coat of arms was adopted by the municipality in 2003 and can be interpreted as follows according to Guy Ascarat, heraldist and historian.

The coat of arms is that of the landlords of Domezain, whereby the falcon is sometimes replaced by an eagle . The red lion is the symbol of power and domination. In ancient Egypt , the falcon is a royal attribute that has a symbolism similar to that of the eagle. Eagle and lion, often juxtaposed, are emblems of power.

Saint-Jean-Baptiste local church in Domezain

Domezain local church

It is dedicated to John the Baptist and was probably built in the 17th century on the site of the aristocratic residence of the Domezain family, who presumably lost their noble position during the Huguenot Wars , at the same time as their castle was destroyed. The massive tower of the castle has been converted into the church's bell tower , the entrance portal and the apse could be the remains of a church from the 16th century, possibly the castle chapel , or a late Gothic reconstruction at the beginning of the 17th century. Date inscriptions "1607" and "1647" on the bell tower probably indicate restoration work. Like many other churches, this church was transformed into a " Temple of Reason " during the French Revolution . Nothing is known about looting during this period.

The top of the main altar is a work by the region-famous artist Giraudy from 1772. It consists of three paintings, each showing a scene from the life of the patron saint John. The capitals and columns are decorated with flowers and garlands . Most of the statues in the work represent angels .

The altarpiece is presented in a variety of colors in red, blue and gold tones, while the most valuable element, the tabernacle , is made entirely of gold. Above the door of the tabernacle there is a medallion and a cross with a halo . A weasel can be seen on the medallion resting on a Bible, an indication of the purity of the spirit.

The altarpiece in a side chapel is dedicated to Mary , the mother of Jesus . Its baroque style is particularly emphasized by the large winding columns , so-called serpent columns , and gold plating. In the center there is a painting depicting the appearance of Mary to St. Dominic , a common motif with the founder of the Dominican Order . A representation of the Holy Spirit surrounded by vine branches and a multitude of angels and cherubs occupies the top of the composition.

The church has several stained glass windows from the 20th century, which show a neo-Gothic influence, with motifs of saints, which can be recognized by their attributes . One shows Anthony of Padua carrying the baby Jesus in his arms. He wears the monk's robe of the Franciscans and holds an iris , a symbol of purity, in his right hand. Another glass window shows the patron saint John the Baptist. The preacher of the Savior points up with his right index finger. He holds a large bamboo cross as a reminder of his work in the desert and carries the Lamb of God . A third window shows Johanna von Orléans with a sword on her belt, waving a white standard .

Votive chapel by Domezain-Berraute

It was built at the end of the 19th or beginning of the 20th century, at a time of increasing devotion to Mary following the apparitions of Mary in Lourdes . Their small roof is made in the ox blood colors traditionally used in the Basque Country. A niche hides a statue of the Virgin Mary.

Potestat watermill

It was built around 1772, as evidenced by an inscription above the entrance. The associated house is built over the Ruisseau de Lauhirasse. The mill has two millstones , one for chopping corn and another for wheat. The mill can be visited on request.
