history
It is considered certain that the area was already settled in prehistory . Located in the archaeological site Muagareta discovered grave mound is larger than most found in the Basque Country. Instead of the usual eight to twelve meters in diameter, this has a diameter of 24 meters. It also contains a sizable accumulation of charcoal , dated between 830 and 1030 AD, as well as a Roman bronze coin from the third century AD amid the charcoal. Since it is believed that the Basque Country economy was still largely based on barter in the Middle Ages , it is believed that former Roman coins were used as ritual objects at cremations .
The parishes of Lohitzun and Oyhercq belonged after their establishment to a collection of parishes under the direction of the parish of Domezain, which became the capital of a short-lived canton when the territories were reorganized at the beginning of the French Revolution . On June 13, 1841, the former parishes Lohitzun and Oyhercq merged to form the new parish Lohitzun-Oyhercq.

Attractions
- Parish church in Lohitzun, consecrated to John the Baptist . The name of the church of Romanesque origin appeared in scriptures from the 13th century. The reason for the construction may be the course of one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela in the municipality. The Romanesque entrance portal in the shape of a pointed arch , which has been restored and only slightly altered over the centuries , also dates from the same era . Its shape shows a gradual transition from the construction of the late Middle Ages to the Gothic style. It is made of the yellow sandstone commonly used in the region and today has a heavy wooden door studded with nails. As is customary with Basque sacred buildings, the church is surrounded by a wall and a cemetery on which disc-shaped grave steles, called Hilarri , can be seen, but here in a comparatively small number. The baroque altarpiece recalls the advent and opulence of the liturgical art of the 17th century. He is on a altar placed in a triangular shape and consists mainly of statuettes , the Saints and angels represent. In the middle, a triangle with a gold-plated cross on top symbolizes the Trinity .
- Parish church of Oyhercq, dedicated to St. Stephen . Like the parish church in Lohitzun, this church is surrounded by a wall and a cemetery with disc-shaped grave steles dating from the 17th century, a time when a lapidary style of burial art was booming in the Basque Country. The parish of Oyhercq has been mentioned in the scriptures since the 15th century, and it is believed that the church dates from this period. The simple and rural architectural style of the building, which is more reminiscent of a house, shows influences from the Romanesque. His choir contains an altarpiece with a variety of figures whose naive aesthetics reveal that they come from ancient times. Originally the entire work was gilded, but today it is polychrome .
