Barn at Arbérats

Arbérats-Sillègue is a French municipality with 257 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The municipality belongs to the Bayonne arrondissement and the canton of Pays de Bidache, Amikuze et Ostibarre (until 2015: canton of Saint-Palais ).

The inhabitants are called Aberaztars or Zilhekoar . The name in the Basque language is accordingly Arberatze-Zilhekoa .

geography

Arbérats-Sillègue is about 60 kilometers south-east of Bayonne in the French part of the Basque Country . It is part of the Pays de Mixe, a high valley of the Bidouze in the historical region of Lower Navarra .

The community is surrounded by the neighboring communities:

Arbérats-Sillègue lies in the catchment area of the Adour River and is crossed by two tributaries of the Bidouze, the Récalde streams, which partly form the border with Arbouet-Sussaute, and Eyherachar, which rises in the local area.

history

Arbérats was first mentioned in 1125 with the name Arberas , and Sillègue was first mentioned around 1160 with the place name Silegue .

The history of Arbérats is closely linked to the Lord of Arbérats. In the 13th century the feudal lord had the honor of attending the homage of Sancho VII , King of Navarre , in the castle of Gramont . From the dynasty of the Arbérats only the castle from the 18th century remains, which was originally built as a mound castle in the Middle Ages . The Armendaritz d'Arbérats family were successors by marriage between 1500 and 1550, and in April 1655 they were given the title of baron by royal decree . The family ruled the area until the French Revolution .

In contrast to Arbérats, the history of Sillègue is less prestigious. The feudal lord of Domezain owned a noble residence in the 16th century. Before the union with Arbérats on April 14, 1841, the village was called Sillègue-les-Domezain for this reason.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Arbérats-Sillègue

The coat of arms of the noble house Salle d'Arbérats, which has appeared in the documents since 1316, was adopted by the municipality for the whole town in 2002. According to Guy Ascarat , heraldist and historian, it can be interpreted as follows.

The ten shells are often represented in coats of arms in Lower Navarra and point to the Camino de Santiago , a pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia ( Spain ). According to legend, the shells were won by knights who fought against the Moors in the 9th century in the Battle of Clavijo under King Ramiro I of Asturias . Arbérats-Sillègue was between the pilgrim hostels of Osserain and Saint-Palais .

Attractions

  • Castle of Arbérats. As with most medieval mansions, there was initially a mound castle on the site of today's castle. Probably built around the year 1000, the owners were the Arbérat family, who subsequently gave the village its name. The first residential building was built in the 12th century, called Palacio d'Arbérats . It may have survived until the 18th century when a new building was erected on the site. This, in turn, was torn down a century later by the then owner Mathilde de Lalande d'Olce, in order to erect the magnificent building that can be seen today between 1895 and 1898. On February 21, 1948, the castle became the property of the French family treasury, which ran the house until 2005 as a colonie de vacances , a holiday facility for children and young people. A renovation and conversion of a part of the building in 1993 as a holiday accommodation was not crowned with success.
  • Church of Saint-Laurent of Arbérats, dedicated to Lawrence of Rome . In the 12th century the church was in the cartulary of Dax under the name de Sancte Laurencius Arberaz mentioned. Around 1860 the church received a relic from Rome of the Christian martyr to whom the church is consecrated. It is exhibited in the choir next to a large painting, probably from the 17th century, showing Laurentius, along with the grate on which he was put to death. The church was rebuilt or rebuilt in 1615, as an inscription above the entrance, called the Porte des Cagots , shows. The Cagots were an excluded and discriminated group from society. They could not be excluded from practicing the Christian religion, but obviously had to enter the church through a separate entrance to prevent them from mingling with the other believers. The steeple is much more recent than the rest of the church building. It is built in the neo-Gothic style, which was very popular in the 19th century.
  • Church Saint-Pierre of Sillègue, dedicated to the apostle Simon Peter . In the 12th century the church was mentioned in the copy book of Dax under the name Sancte Petrus de Silegue . The current building is the result of a restoration in 1381 and a reconstruction in the 17th or 18th centuries. In the cemetery around the church there are some grave crosses with a special feature. The crosses have round ends on the arms and are called Navarra crosses (croix navarraises) because of their area of distribution . They are vaguely reminiscent of the shape of the Hilarri , in which round discs are set on steles .
