history

Urepel split off from Aldudes on February 15, 1862 and has since formed an independent community. Before that it was a hamlet of Aldudes with an extensive pasture landscape. With the upswing of Saint-Étienne-de-Baïgorry , many families moved here in the 19th century and developed a village. The former Kingdom of Navarre has been split into a French and a Spanish part since 1512, but the actual demarcation of this part was controversial for a long time. The contract of 1856 regulates the responsibilities to this day for the Pays Quint , which forms the southern part of Urepel. The area belongs to Spain, but is administered by France. The residents are French nationals and can cultivate the land for a fee to Spain.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Urepel

The municipality has had the coat of arms since 2002 and can be interpreted as follows according to Guy Ascarat, heraldist and historian.

In the upper left field you can see a Glevenrad , called escarboucle in French . It comes from the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Navarre . The two sheep on the top right symbolize the extensive pasture land of the valley, which is still farmed undivided today. The initials “VE” in the field at the bottom left stand for the Urepel brand, which stands for Val d'Erro and is affixed to the cattle every May. The three corrugated bars on the field at the bottom right represent the three rivers that flow together at Urepel into the Nive des Aldudes. The quill pen refers to Fernando Aire Etxart, called Xalbador, a former well-known poet and Bertsolari.

Population development

After the parish of Alduldes split off, it showed the highest number of inhabitants of 1030 in the 1861 census. This was followed by a long phase of stagnation that continues to this day.

  • Inharabia farm. The farmhouse is one of the oldest in Urepel. It could have been built in the second half of the 18th century, as can be seen from the two twin windows , one window with a rounded window sill and the decorations on the arches of the roof. In the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, redesigns were carried out, in particular the ground floor was converted into a shop. The house is built and plastered with rubble stones made of limestone and sandstone , accompanied by pebbles. The first floor is partly built from half-timbering, which is filled with pebbles and covered with a thick layer of lime. The roof with its elongated surfaces is covered with hollow tiles. The arched frame of the entrance door extends including the window above and together forms the shape of a bottle. Between the entrance and the window there is a plaque embellished with three engraved crosses. The top floor originally had a wooden balcony that no longer exists today. The house shows the traditional layout of the interior. In the middle is the eskaratz , a central entrance area, in front the living rooms of the owners, which continue on the first floor. The year "1862" above the gate indicates the year of sale, in which changes were made. At the end of the 19th century the farm was converted into a sheep farm after a new dwelling was built nearby. In the 20th century, the farmhouse was changed again by completely transforming it into an agricultural outbuilding. The house is built and plastered with rubble stones made of limestone and sandstone. The roof with its elongated surfaces is covered with hollow tiles and is supported with decorated brackets. The windows and doors are made of wood or stone. Like most farmhouses in the region, the rooms were originally arranged around an eskaratz . The living rooms were located in the front area and on the first floor. The rear area was intended for the agricultural work and for the stable and the top floor housed the hayloft in the traditional manner. The farmhouse is privately owned and registered as a national treasure.
  • Xaliesenea farm. It was built in 1787, as evidenced by a corresponding date that is engraved on the lintel of the barn door and can also be read on the ornate arches that support the roof. It is located in the district of Xaliexenea not far from the center of the municipality. The house was restored in the 19th and especially in the 20th century with the construction of a terrace in the back. The house is built and plastered with rubble stones made of limestone and sandstone. The gable roof with its elongated surfaces is covered with hollow tiles. The windows and entrances are framed with limestone, and several older windows have rounded window sills. The farmhouse is traditionally arranged with a front part for living rooms and a rear part for agricultural work rooms. Around an eskaratz , these areas continue on an upper floor.
