The Lacarre family built Lacarre Castle between the 11th and 14th centuries in a strategically important place at the crossroads of two important roads. Many centuries later, the building would be named Harispe Castle after Jean Isidore Harispe , a French general who acquired it in 1820.
Paul Raymond, archivist and historian of the 19th century, noted that the parish of Lacarre was a subsidiary of Gamarthe and that the Baronate of Lacarre was under the Kingdom of Navarre .

Attractions
Parish church
It is consecrated to Martin von Tours . The exact date of construction of the original church is unknown. The inscription at the entrance to the north side chapel reads: "HENRY DE LAFUSUN BARON DE LACARRE 1874", the door on the south chapel bears the date 1880. These details confirm on the one hand a comprehensive renovation or restoration at that time and on the other hand the appropriation of the northern chapel to the noble Lucarre family. The entrance porch has two leaded glass windows , one of which is signed by the master glass painter Dauriac. The single nave nave is closed to the east with a straight apse to which the sacristy is attached. To the west, the church is equipped with a square, three-storey bell tower above the entrance porch, on which a polygonal spire sits. The walls of the two upper floors of the tower are pierced with arched twin windows, behind which the bells are hidden on the top floor. A straight, brick-built outside staircase leads to the galleries inside, whose places, as in most Basque churches, are traditionally reserved for men during mass . On the north wall there are numerous disc-shaped grave stelae, so-called hilarri , which date from the 17th century.
The reredos on the main altar in the choir probably dates from the 17th or 18th century and is dedicated to the patron saint of the church, St. Martin. He is shown in the central painting in bishop's clothing, wearing a miter , holding a crook in his right hand and fringed by angels . The oil painting is framed by four marble columns and gilded plant ornaments. On the level above of the reredos is a statue of St. Martin with a representation of the Eye of Providence above his head. The motif of the angels in the central painting is taken up again by two small putti that hang on a painted curtain above the reredos under the choir ceiling.
The peculiarity of the monument in memory of the soldiers of the community who fell in World War I is that it was created on the tympanum of the entrance. It consists of the sculpture of a reclining poilus and a plaque above it with the names of nine soldiers.
Lacarre Cemetery
In the cemetery next to the parish church there are two graves that are registered as national cultural assets. These are the grave of Jean Isidore Harispe and the burial chapel of the Luro family. The latter was built in the neo-Gothic style at the beginning of the 20th century as a burial place for the family. It is coated with concrete slabs that are decorated with irises . Two lead glass windows and a quatrefoil illuminate the interior and are works by the renowned Mauméjean stained glass . The grave inside the chapel with a medallion of bronze decorated, showing a portrait of the mayor of Lacarre. It is with “L. Danglade ”signed by the same artist who created the memorial for the fallen soldiers of the parish at the church.
Lacarre Castle, called Harispe Castle
The forerunner of today's castle, a permanent house , was probably built between the 11th and 13th centuries at a strategically important intersection. From the lordly Lacarre family, first mentioned at the beginning of the 12th century, the building came into the possession of the Asiayn family through marriage in 1368, then into the hands of the Arbide family in 1525, then the Lafuntzun family in 1668. General Jean Isidore Harispe bought the property in 1820. Although it had been remodeled in the 18th century, particularly with regard to the interior, the building still had the appearance of the original permanent house with its wall thickness and medieval wall openings in the first half of the 19th century . In 1880 the property was finally completely rebuilt according to plans by the architect Doyère with a view to creating façades in a mixture of neo-renaissance and neo-Louis-Treize styles and interior furnishings in the Empire style. Today's three-storey building is flanked by two small corner towers on the south side and a large balcony above the main entrance, which is decorated with Harispe's coat of arms. The vestibule leads to an imposing wooden spiral staircase that allows access to the upper floors. The former baroque garden and the orangery have been replaced by a lawn with a dovecote and ancillary buildings. After the castle had been owned by the descendants of Jean Isidore Harispe for a long time, a Spanish couple bought it for € 200,001 in 2015.
Etxegoinea farm
In 1350 and 1366 the farm was mentioned as echegoyen in the list of households of the Kingdom of Navarre. The current farmhouse probably dates from the first half of the 17th century, as the load-bearing parts are made of wood and the interior partitions and the upper half of the front part are made of timber. Restorations were carried out in the 19th and 20th centuries, and in 2004 the yoke that housed the stable and the hayloft was torn down. The keel arches visibly engraved on the threshold of a room date from the 17th century, as does the fireplace with corbels in the kitchen. As with all farmhouses in the region, this house also has an eskaratz , a central entrance area from which all other rooms in the living and working areas are accessible. An annex houses the bread oven, the poultry and pigsty are in the courtyard.
Economy and Infrastructure
Agriculture and animal husbandry are important economic factors in the community. Lacarre is located in the AOC areas of Ossau-Iraty , a traditionally made semi-hard cheese made from sheep's milk, as well as the pig breed and the ham "Kintoa".
