Parish Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste

The parish church is dedicated to John the Baptist . The original building, called sanctus martinus de bunos , is mentioned in the Livre rouge ( German  "Red Book" ), a collection of documents from the 11th and 12th centuries of the Dax Cathedral . The entrance portal is from 1716 and indicates a new building at the beginning of the 18th century on medieval foundations. Restorations were carried out both in 1891 and in the following century. The church has a nave with a nave , closed with a flat apse and a bell tower on the west side. Inside there is a gallery , which can be reached via a separate external staircase and an entrance.

Under the porch is one of the grave slabs, which are traditionally dedicated to a high-ranking person or the pastor. However, this is a mystery. On it three crosses are depicted in relief, symbols of the crucifixion of Christ on Golgotha . The cross of Christ shows a ray motif like a monstrance . Inscriptions can be seen at the foot to the right of each cross: "JE" "ET" and "E", below the cross then: "FAITE PAR ETCHEBERRI DIT TAFELNABERRY LE 7 AOUT DE L'ANNEE 1817 NO3" ( German:  "created by Etcheberri, called Tafelnaberry, on August 7, 1817 No3 “ ), although the meaning of the last three letters cannot be clarified.

Altarpieces have been used to illustrate the Catholic doctrine since the 17th century . In the center of the altarpiece in this church is a painting that shows the patron saint , John the Baptist, as a hermit scantily clad in a fur with a sheep by his side near a river. The cross that he carries in his left hand symbolically indicates the crucifixion of Christ. On the upper frame of the picture you can see a carved seraph with wings outstretched. Above the painting, a monstrance in the tympanum indicates the presence of God. The composition is completed by two Corinthian columns on either side of the painting, which are decorated with vines and putti .

The gilded wood tabernacle is shaped like a temple with Corinthian columns. The door is decorated with a relief in the shape of a cloud, symbol of the Holy Spirit , and a triangle, symbol of the Trinity . Above and below the door, medallions each show three heads of angels , mediators between God and humans. All of these symbols indicate the presence of God in the sacrament of the Eucharist .

House Barberaenea

Most of the inscriptions on the lintels provide information about the owner of the house. However, at this window the reader is invited to a prayer. Three sections are framed by a relief of small waves. The left section bears the inscription "IESUS MARIA IOSEPHF", with a rosette behind the name of Jesus and a Basque cross behind the name of Mary. The right section is a call to the apostle James with his inscription "SANCTE IACOBE ORA PRO NOBIS ANNO 1716" ( German  "Heiliger Jakob, pray for us, Anno 1716" ). In the middle section, a somewhat clumsy figure wears a high hat, a staff in his right hand and a pendant that is reminiscent of a pilgrim's shell . It is a representation of a pilgrim on the Camino de Santiago to Santiago de Compostela . The purpose of the inscription is to invite passing pilgrims to rest.
