history

An early settlement of the area can be traced back to prehistory based on the dolmens Xuberaxain-Harri and Gasteynia , which are classified as Monuments historiques . Mendive was first mentioned in the writings in the 14th century, but a parish must have existed earlier, as the parish church of Saint-Vincent and its chapel of Saint-Sauveur d'Iraty date from the 12th century. At that time, the village had a hospital for the care of pilgrims passing by on their way to Santiago de Compostela under the direction of the Order of Malta .

Toponyms and mentions of Mendive were:

  • Mendive (1350),
  • Mendibe (1366),
  • Mendibe (1513, documents from Pamplona ) and
  • Mendive (1750, map by Cassini ).

Population development

After a peak in the number of inhabitants of around 680 in the middle of the 19th century, the number fell during short recovery phases until the 1990s to a level of around 180 inhabitants, which is still held today.

Attractions

Parish Church of Saint Vincent
Parish church (side view)
  • Parish church of Mendive, dedicated to Saint Vincent de Xaintes , first bishop of the Dax diocese in the third century . It was originally built in the Middle Ages . The entrance portal of sandstone dating from the 12th century, as well as the type and material of the masonry Association confirm. Before becoming the parish church of the parish, the house of God was a private church of one of Mendive's oldest noble families. As a result, the parish was subordinate to the Order of Malta through the intermediary and commander Aphat-Ospital. The first restoration took place in 1682 after the church was set on fire during the Huguenot Wars by Protestant troops under Gabriel de Lorges , Count of Montgomery, like hundreds of others in the region. On this occasion, the arched entrance portal was also restored, as the inscription "Maestro Ioanne de Echapare rectore fuit reparatio anno Domini 1682" shows. Further restorations took place in the 19th and 20th centuries, in particular with the construction of the porch and the sacristy as an extension on the south side. The stained glass windows are signed by the glass painter Henri Gesta from Toulouse and date from 1922. The current building has a single nave , which is closed to the east with a flat apse and to the west with a bell tower with two arched sound openings of the bell chamber. A brick exterior staircase leads to the gallery inside, which surrounds the nave on three sides. The nave is covered by a false barrel vault in the shape of a round arch. The parish church holds u. a. a wooden statue , Madonna with baby Jesus , from the 17th century. In the cemetery that surrounds the church, there are several disc-shaped funerary stelae , known as hilarri , which tie in with the pre-Christian tradition and were very popular in the Basque Country between the 16th and 18th centuries. There are also tombs with Navarra crosses, which are an adaptation of the Christian crosses in a local style.
Chapel of the Redeemer Saint-Sauveur d'Iraty
  • Redeemer Chapel. In the 12th century, the Romanesque chapel in the mountains was first mentioned in the scriptures, in the 13th century under the name under the name Sanctus Salvador juxta Sanctum Justum and around 1460 under the name Sent-Saubador . Like the parish church in Mendive, the chapel was under the Order of Malta. In the Middle Ages it was an important stage of the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. At the request of pastor Jean Oxoby-Indart of Béhorléguy, it was restored and redesigned in 1727, as evidenced by the corresponding year together with the name "INDART" on the keystone of the round arch of the western entrance. The nave was extended to the west and two buttresses were added to the south. The interior of the chapel was also redesigned. In the 20th century, a small room was added to the sacristy in the south. The single-nave nave consists of two levels, one semi-underground and one with facilities under the roof, and is closed off to the east with a semi-circular apse. The original, Romanesque, narrow and high window openings have been preserved. The interior of the chapel is poorly decorated. A gallery, whose places are traditionally reserved for men during a mass , is located on the west side of the nave. Outside the chapel is surrounded by a Way of the Cross , which with fourteen stations reminds of the Passion of Jesus Christ , the first thirteen being represented by cube-shaped stones on round pillars. The number of the station together with the word "ESTACIONEA" is carved into the limestone in Roman numerals on these cubes . Not far from the chapel, the last station of the Way of the Cross is represented by a monumental cross, which is decorated on one side with a depiction of the crucifixion and on the other with a sun, a symbol of the resurrection of Jesus Christ . The cross bears the year "1805" as an engraving on the front, the entire Stations of the Cross probably dates from the beginning of the 19th century.
  • Lahibarrea farm. The house was probably built in the 17th century, completely repaired in the 18th century and restored in 1813, as evidenced by the year on the keystone of the entrance arch to the ezkaratz . This is the central entrance area, which in this house leads to the kitchen on the right, the bedrooms on the left and to the stable in the back. A fireplace with triangular brackets in the kitchen and a small limestone window can be seen from the original construction . It is said that the farm was once a stage stop for receiving pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.
  • Dolmen Xuberaxain-Harri . It is located in the Chilardoy district on a terrace at an altitude of 550 m. The dolmen is leaned against a pile of stones that form the remains of the barrow that covered it. The burial chamber consists of four vertical stone slabs made of pink sandstone and a thick stone slab as a cover.
