Parish church

It is dedicated to the apostle Simon Peter and its origins probably go back to the Middle Ages , because a church sanctus petrus de oste was mentioned in the Livre Rouge of the cathedral of Dax , a manuscript collection from the 11th and 12th centuries. The year 1732 in an inscription above the western entrance of the aisle shows the date of the first renovations. A second wave of the redesign concerned the bell tower with its helmet , window openings, the buttress , the entrance porch and the sacristy . The church was restored in the 20th century. The long building is made of sandstone , its facades partially plastered. To the west is the square bell tower, reinforced with buttresses, with arched windows. His octagonal, slate-roofed helmet is decorated with ridge turrets at the corners . The ground floor of the two-storey apse is interrupted by arcades , the sacristy is housed on the first floor with arched windows, which is accessible via an external brick staircase. The south aisle inside the church is separated from the main nave by two round arches.

The church has a sculpture that shows a dove as a sign of the Holy Spirit on a halo . The style and finish of the gilding allow the work to be dated between the 17th and 18th centuries.

The style of the altarpiece in the choir suggests that it was built in the 17th or 18th century. Above the tabernacle one can see a statue of the patron saint of the church, St. Peter, in an unadorned niche and without any decoration. He is shown in a sitting position with his right hand raised in blessing and two keys in his left hand. The first key on gilded wood appears to be original, while the second, made of metal, was added later. Its mantle is decorated with foliage on a matt background. According to classic iconography , he wears a miter and a pectoral on his chest. Two branches with foliage and two winding columns , so-called serpentine columns , the shafts of which are covered with vines, frame the statue of Peter. On the uppermost part of the altarpiece, the gable, God the Father appears , his arms spread out in reconciliation.

The door of the tabernacle, which is believed to be from the 17th century, is remarkably designed. A kneeling man, accompanied by a lamb, holds a cross. It is the representation of the good shepherd who leads his flock to eternal salvation. The lamb recalls the sacrifice of Isaac by Abraham , but also the crucifixion of Christ , who redeemed people from sins.

Hosta cemetery

Old grave crosses and disc-shaped grave steles can be seen in the cemetery that surrounds the parish church. A grave cross dating from 1658 has the shape of a Greek cross with four arms of equal length. The year 1658 can be seen in a dotted circle on the widening base. Other decorative elements are too blurred to be identified with any certainty. Above the date a plow could be engraved , in the middle a cross, a rosette or a disk could be engraved. Grave crosses from the 17th century are still often found in Basque cemeteries. In the cemetery of Hosta there is a grave cross from 1669, which is registered as a national treasure.

One of the disc-shaped grave steles in the cemetery dates from 1561. Disc-shaped grave steles, a symbol of the transition from earthly to heavenly life, are made of stone and consist of a trapezoidal base and a round disc top. In this example, a cross decorated with lilies divides the disk into four sectors in which four individual rosettes are carved. On the lower part a double patterned rosette is engraved below the inscription with the year 1561.

An unusual grave cross made of gray stone from 1760 has a trapezoidal base like a disc-shaped grave stele. The short arms, slightly curved at their ends, are also reminiscent of a disk. The inscription on the head is barely legible. Below, at the level of the side arms, the words "DECEMBRIS 1760 RIPA" can be seen, the abbreviation for Requiescat in pace ( German  peace in peace ). Finally, a Lauburu or Basque cross is engraved on the upper part of the foot .

Fixed house Jauregia

First mentions were made in 1306, 1365 and 1412 in the lists of households of the Kingdom of Navarre under the name sale dozte . The owner of the house and landlord of Hosta had access to the Kingdom's assembly of estates and accompanied King Charles II of Navarre on his campaign to Portugal. The construction with a square floor plan and walls with an average cross-section of one meter is characteristic of a permanent house that was supposed to ward off small enemy attacks. It could be that the building also had a tower on the south side. The first reconstruction, probably an extension, took place in 1744, as evidenced by an inscription on the lintel above the entrance. On the slightly reddish stone of the lintel, a rosette is engraved as a decoration above and left and right of the inscription. In the 19th century the house was converted into a farmhouse and restored in the 20th century.

Economy and Infrastructure

Ossau-Iraty

Agriculture is an important economic factor in the municipality, as is tourism, which benefits from the geographical location at the foot of the Pyrenees . Hosta is located in the AOC zones of Ossau-Iraty , a traditionally produced semi-hard cheese made from sheep's milk, as well as the pig breed and the ham "Kintoa".
