Parish Church of Notre-Dame
Interior of the parish church
  • Parish church, dedicated to John the Baptist and Mary, the mother of Jesus . The inscription on the pointed arch above the front door of the church shows the year 1866 and indicates the year the church was built. The initiative came from the pastor Bourbotte, as another inscription on a grave stele under the porch reveals: “CI-GIT L'ABBE BOURBOTTE CURE D'ESTERENCUBY DE 1866 A 1885 MORT A L'AGE DE 47 ANS APRES AVOIR CONSTRUIT CETTE EGLISE “( German  Here lies the priest Bourbotte, pastor of Esterençuby from 1866 to 1885, died at the age of 47 after building this church ). The church replaces an earlier church in the same place, the date of which is unknown, although writings from 1828 already mentioned it. A restoration took place in the 20th century, which included the construction of the entrance porch and a small extension to the apse . A bell tower with a slate-covered wall cladding, four roof turrets and a polygonal helmet rises on the slate-covered church in the west. To the east it is closed with an apse with sloping wall surfaces and a polygonal half-hip roof. The walls of the long building with a nave are built with limestone and sandstone masonry and provided with ogival windows. The ceiling inside is a false, pointed barrel vault, the choir ceiling is a false ribbed vault . As is usual in Basque churches, a gallery , traditionally reserved for men during mass , surrounds the interior.
